COVID19: A Reminder

The Pursuit of Happyness

The Pursuit of Happyness Ni Macoushla Mae L. Secuya   l.

Material Girl: Queen of Pop

Image
One of the biggest, most influential pop stars that has graced the world with her talent. A literal icon , she is. Madonna Louise Ciccone is an American singer-songwriter and actress. Often referred to as the “Queen of Pop” and rightfully so, her tracks have been pushing the limits of her stardom higher and higher. An absolute legend. In 1978, she moved to New York pursuing a career in modern dance. After performing as a drummer, guitarist and vocalist in the rock bands Breakfast Club and Emmy, she made a name for herself as going solo while pumping out a series of all-time bestselling albums. Her various works which I suppose some would find controversial incorporate social, political, sexual, and religious themes all packaged in her incredible and incredibly meta pieces. Musical career aside, another thing that further pushed up her popularity was her roles in various films such as Desperately Seeking Susan (1985) , Dick Tracy (1990) , A League of Their Own (1992) , and...

Plastic On-screen Love and the Impressionable Minds of Youth

The internet and its contents have a heavy and usually poor influence on how our youths perceive real marriages and relationships as a whole, especially without parental guidance. According to Zwier (2012, as cited in Banaag, M. E. K. G., et al.), Adolescents, through their own unique ways do explore the expectations and standards that society has expected of them through the information they consume from both mass and social media. Apart from the body image issues that are also a prevailing problem amongst teens, especially young girls, there are also limiting social boxes that society puts them in. What about relationships? The first real world relationships that many adolescents see are of course their parents or guardians. The way these significant figures in their lives present themselves will have the biggest impact on what they perceive as normal and ideal. As they grow older, they will be more and more exposed to the concepts and ideals of which society holds up as the ...

African Music: Makossa

Image
Each country and their regions all have their own brand of music. Even if some may sound similar or have stemmed from the same genre, people always have a way of making it their own and refining it in ways that others cannot. Music truly is a magical blessing.  Among the many music forms of Africa, the one that really caught my attention was the Makossa genre. Makossa, known for being a funky dance music and quite literally meaning "I dance" in the Douala language had first started molding itself in the 1950s, it uses strong electric bass rhythm as well as having prominent brass. As the 1960s rolled in, the Makossa music genre had become the most popular in Cameroon. Later, the genre, despite some controversial artists, had become more and more popular and widespread to mainstream audiences. African music, much like most forms of music is made for a variety of things, whether it be events, protests, entertainment, etc. But the Makossa genre is generally made for entertainment...
